My journey into photography sparked by a captivating photo

My entry into photography is quite a fascinating story. At the age of 17, I stumbled across a stunning black and white artistic photo of a female nude that left a lasting impression on me. The curves, lines, and the interplay of light and shadow captured in that image unknowingly ignited my passion for photography. I later saved up to buy a point-and-shoot camera, but I quickly realized that creating impactful images required more skill and understanding than I initially thought.

After serving in the military, I transitioned to the workplace, but my enthusiasm for photography drove me to switch careers and enter the photographic equipment industry. I opened a camera store on Hankou Street in Taipei City with a friend, fostering greater connections between my work and photography. As I delved deeper into photography, I found that my love for landscapes greatly surpassed my interest in portrait photography. I began to travel extensively, taking time to visit various places around the globe to capture the beauty of different scenic spots.

Landscape photography constitutes a significant part of Wang Baoguo’s life. He enjoys capturing images and sharing them, possessing unique insights into visual focus, light, and composition. After an hour-long interview, the editor gained valuable insights from his experiences with the α7R V in landscape photography. (α7R V + SEL1635GM2, 16mm, F16, 520s, ISO 50) (see large image)

For great landscape photos, high image quality, high pixel count, and dual card slots are essential camera features.

From the perspective of landscape photography, I believe the most crucial feature for a camera is “high image quality.” Landscape photographers aim to clearly display their hard work and share it with others. High image quality allows for the presentation of fine details and enhances shooting experiences through higher tolerance and better post-production flexibility.

Moreover, “high pixels” are equally important as they not only reveal more image details but also facilitate cropping. For instance, if the lens’s focal length is insufficient while shooting, the advantages of high pixels become apparent when recomposing the image through cropping. High pixel cameras ensure that the resolution post-cropping meets the demands without concerns over image size affecting various applications. Configuring a camera with “dual memory card slots” is essential too. Landscape photography is subject to weather conditions and many variables, and traveling often means that every photograph taken is precious. Having dual cards ensures secure backups.

Wang Baoguo stressed that for landscape photography, cameras must have 'high image quality,' 'high pixels,' and 'dual memory card slots.' (α7R V + SEL1224GM, 12mm, F11, 30s, ISO 100) (see large image)

The ‘four-axis multi-angle flip screen’ enables effortless composition of photos from unique angles.

As a long-term user of the α7R IV, after using the α7R V for a while, I discovered it offers several new features that significantly enhance landscape photography.

Firstly, the α7R V introduces a four-axis multi-angle flip screen. This new design is incredibly user-friendly for landscape photography enthusiasts as it allows for both up/down flipping and side flipping. The screen can be easily adjusted to the most comfortable angle for both horizontal and vertical formats, which is particularly beneficial for those of us who often use low-angle vertical compositions. Additionally, I sometimes record instructional video content with my camera. The four-axis multi-angle flip screen design ensures that whether I connect an HDMI or 3.5mm headphone cable, the screen remains unobstructed, enhancing overall usability.

Previously, the screen on earlier models could only flip up/down, which posed challenges for Wang Baoguo, who often composes images from a low angle. The α7R V’s four-axis multi-angle flip screen merges tilting and side flaps, providing him better shooting experiences.

Wang Baoguo skillfully utilized the four-axis multi-angle flip screen of the α7R V to capture landscapes with a sense of spatial depth from low angles. (α7R V + SEL1635GM2, 16mm, F11, 1/20s, ISO 100) (see large image)

Secondly, the automatic white balance on the α7R V is more precise compared to older models, particularly beneficial for night photography. Unlike daylight, night scenes don’t have stable light sources, leading to interference in the camera’s automatic white balance due to mixed artificial lights. Yet, using the α7R V for night scenes, I noticed a notable improvement in automatic white balance accuracy. This advancement is attributed to the new visible light + infrared sensor on the camera’s front and the AI processing unit, which uses deep learning to achieve precise white balance even in challenging lighting conditions. Consequently, images taken with the α7R V in complex lighting scenarios are closer to what the human eye perceives, thus saving time in color correction during post-production.

For landscape photography, color accuracy is vital. The new sensor and AI processing unit in the α7R V enhance its automatic white balance significantly, especially in night photography featuring complex artificial lighting.

AI Autofocus enables photographers to handle unexpected situations with ease

While single-point focus adequately meets the demands of landscape photography most of the time, there are occasions when moving subjects, like people or animals, need to be captured. In such instances, the AI processing unit in the α7R V is a major advantage. Its advanced subject recognition capability can identify a broader range of subjects compared to its predecessors, significantly increasing the likelihood of capturing successful shots.

For instance, when I took the α7R V to the Faroe Islands, I utilized this feature to easily photograph Arctic puffins along the cliff’s edge. The α7R V would prioritize detecting the puffins’ eyes and maintain tracking. If the puffins turned their heads away, becoming undetectable, the camera would then lock on their heads. Even when the puffins performed elaborate movements, making their eyes and heads hard to capture, the α7R V would adjust and reframe to capture clear images of the entire bird. Its capability to maintain focus despite various distractions around the subject is impressive and highly satisfying.

Additionally, AI autofocus serves another useful purpose when taking selfies with people in the scene. Many landscape photographers are often alone, capturing images of nature without anyone to document their presence. Even if someone assists with taking a photo, the outcome might not meet the photographer’s standards.

The AI processing unit on the α7R V includes human posture recognition technology, a feature not found in previous models. After setting up a tripod and framing the composition, the photographer simply walks into the predefined spot in the frame. The AI in the α7R V will utilize human posture recognition to lock and track body features while the photographer turns to face the camera, ensuring the eyes or face are locked in focus. Using wireless remote control, capturing scenes with one’s presence becomes effortless.

Just confirm the composition and enable the 'Recognize target: human' function; walk to the designated spot in the frame. The α7R V will lock and track the subject via human posture recognition technology, resulting in stunning self-portraits.

Enhanced picture quality compared to previous models

Despite the α7R V’s retaining the same 61 million pixel count as the α7R IV, I have found the detail, color, and latitude of the α7R V to be significantly superior. The lenses I typically use include the SEL1224GM, SEL1635GM2, and SEL100400GM. Regardless of whether I am photographing landscapes, sunrises, sunsets, or adorable Arctic puffins, zooming in to 100% reveals that all images maintain impressive sharpness.

The most memorable experience was during an aurora shoot, where I used high sensitivity settings at ISO 3200 for a long exposure. I was pleasantly surprised to see that the image retained a high level of detail and texture. Overall, landscape photographs taken with the α7R V and paired with G Master lenses demonstrated clearer lines, textures, and finer details, resulting in a more three-dimensional image overall.

Three sizes of RAW files enhance flexibility in landscape photography

I am thrilled that the α7R V finally offers RAW files in three sizes: L / M / S, which is undoubtedly advantageous for landscape photography. For time-lapse photography, I wouldn’t need an image size as large as 61 million pixels, as processing thousands of RAW files can be resource-intensive and cumbersome, along with storage space considerations.

In today’s social media and internet context, sharing 4K resolution (3840 x 2160) videos suffices, meaning S-size RAW files (4752 x 3168) can meet demand. Typically, I opt for M-size RAW files during time-lapse shooting, crafting these images into high-resolution 4K videos to share the transitions of sunrises, sunsets, and even the Milky Way’s movements with friends and students.

The α7R V’s introduction of three new RAW file sizes enhances shooting convenience. For a one-minute time-lapse video, using images taken at 1-second intervals for 30 minutes would yield 1,800 photos; shooting all in L-size RAW would consume excessive system resources. Selecting RAW files based on necessity is a smart move.

Dual memory card slots offer added security and efficient file management

For most photographers, having a camera with dual memory card slots is preferable to one with a single card slot. Beyond providing backup for captured images, allowing synchronization to both slots, they can also enable separate storage for different file formats to enhance file management efficiency.

On the former point, many shooting locations are often remote and require significant time to wait for the best light and timing to capture ideal images. Dual memory card slots ensure that hard-earned images receive double the protection. Personally, I prefer to store photos in slot 1 and videos or time-lapse captures in slot 2, allowing for quick access to the necessary files when transferring to my computer. Additionally, the α7R V supports CFexpress Type A memory cards, which greatly impresses me. With an increased buffer capacity, it provides a smoother shooting experience during high-speed continuous shooting, making the transfer process to computers quicker.

The dual memory card slot design is indispensable for professional photographers across all genres. Particularly in landscape photography, there are moments when you might only visit a location once in a lifetime. Given the time, money, and energy invested, double protection is crucial.

I also wish to highlight the “bright screen display” function, which many people are unaware of. This feature has been included since the α7R II and is exceptionally beneficial for landscape photography, especially when shooting the Milky Way, sunrises, and similar subjects. Shooting in such conditions often presents visibility challenges. Previously, the method involved using maximum aperture and increasing ISO to set the composition, then adjusting exposure settings for the desired image. The bright screen display function effectively accelerates this process. You can assign it to a custom key and press it as needed, resulting in an illuminated screen/viewfinder for confirming the composition calmly, saving considerable time and effort.

Additionally, the α7R V features a “Style Appearance” function, which introduces ten built-in filter effects. This is particularly useful for novice photographers who may struggle with post-production color correction, as they can utilize these filters to imbue their works with distinctiveness. Experienced users can also derive inspiration for color correction from this feature.

For my photography, I routinely save landscapes in both RAW and JPG formats. Often, the post-processing occurs some time after the shooting concludes. Choosing an appropriate style and appearance during the shoot, combined with adjustments like white balance shifts, assists in recalling the mood and atmosphere from the moment of capture, providing a solid reference during post-production of the RAW files.

Wang Baoguo recommends capturing landscapes in RAW + JPG format, applying preferred styles to JPGs, and using white balance adjustments to achieve optimal color. This approach aids in recalling the mind state and atmosphere for processing RAW files effectively.

An essential tool for professional landscape photographers

As a long-time user of the α7R IV, I wholeheartedly recommend the α7R V. While both share a 61-megapixel sensor, the α7R V is enhanced with the latest BIONZ XR image processing engine. This upgrade vastly improves image details, color performance, and dynamic range. Additionally, the α7R V is the first camera in the Sony α series to incorporate an AI processing unit, allowing for the recognition of a wider variety of subjects as well as supporting human posture recognition. This feature facilitates capturing moving subjects or selfies against beautiful backdrops with ease.

Furthermore, the AI processing unit ensures more precise automatic white balance, producing images that closely resemble what is seen on-site, thereby significantly reducing post-production time. In terms of usability, the α7R V’s four-axis multi-angle flip screen, which was previously unavailable, allows for the combination of tilt and side opening options, making composing low-angle shots straightforward and addressing previous inconveniences. The three available sizes of RAW files and the dual card slot design also enhance flexibility.

For those who share my passion for landscape photography, the α7R V is undoubtedly the top choice available today, boasting high image quality, high pixel count, better controllability, enhanced safety features, and more accurate white balance. These advancements are particularly compelling for users of the α7R IV and earlier models; newcomers to photography will find the α7R V a worthwhile investment that will enable them to dive deeply into their favorite subjects. With the right equipment and skills, capturing stunning landscape photographs becomes a joyful and achievable pursuit.
