Security tension in Baghdad after Muqtada al-Sadr announced his retirement from political work, and the Iraqi authorities announced a curfew in all provinces

Politicians, lawyers, members of the General Secretariat for National Dialogue and Egyptian public figures called on the Egyptian president to intervene to release the former presidential candidate, Abdel Moneim Aboul Fotouh, who was sentenced to 15 years in prison.

The statement, published on Aboul Fotouh’s Facebook page, stated that since last July, he had been exposed to several health crises that caused his condition to deteriorate in a way that “makes him at risk of death at any moment, according to the statement.

The publication added that Aboul Fotouh was subjected to serious medical neglect.

Abul-Fotouh’s family and his defense team submitted several communications and requests to several parties to demand his speedy transfer to a hospital at his family’s expense, but the family and the defense team did not receive any response, as described in the statement.

Among the signatories to the statement are former presidential candidate Hamdeen Sabahi, lawyer Khaled Ali, writer Ahdaf Soueif, journalist Khaled al-Balshi and members of the National Dialogue Secretariat Abdel-Azim Hammad, Nejad al-Borai and Amr Hashem Rabie.

Aboul Fotouh was sentenced last May to 15 years in prison on charges of spreading false news and joining a banned terrorist group.
