Securing Paris 2024: France Calls on Global Support for Olympic Safety

France is preparing to welcome athletes and spectators from all over the world to participate in the Paris Olympics during the summer of 2024. France and its president are keen on the success of the anticipated Games, in addition to the organizers who bet on this unprecedented and bold spectacle. To secure the event, during which millions of sports fans and tourists will stay in the country, for several weeks at the height of next summer, France intends to deploy 45,000 police and security forces, 20,000 members of private security companies, and regarding 15,000 military personnel every day.

The request for military support came following the French government raised the security alert to its highest levels during the recent period, in view of the ongoing war between Ukraine and Russia, and following the attack on the concert hall near Moscow, which led to the death of hundreds and the injury of dozens, a few months before the Paris Olympics, which begin. On July 26, in addition to a threat to launch terrorist attacks on the French capital.

France requests military support
It is common for the country organizing any tournament or sporting event to call on foreign police to help deal with the presence of large numbers of visitors during international sporting events, but it is rare to request military assistance, and this is what France did, as it asked regarding 45 foreign countries for contributions. Several thousand military, police and civilian personnel are expected to help secure the Olympic Games, the Paris 2024 Olympics, according to what sources from the French government reported on Friday.

France requested assistance in several military and police specializations, including equestrian battalions, document forgery detection experts, mine clearance specialists, anti-drone specialists, and police dog teams.

Many countries will help
Several countries, including Poland and Qatar, will send armed forces to help provide security at the Paris Olympics next summer. In this regard, French Ministry of Defense sources said: “Many foreign countries will help us strengthen some vital areas, such as the ability to handle dogs for police units, as the needs are enormous during the games scheduled between July 26 and August 11.”

Poland announced on Thursday that it would send military reinforcements to help provide security for the Summer Olympics, without clarifying the number of soldiers. Polish Defense Minister Wladyslaw Kuciniak-Kamysz wrote on the X platform (formerly Twitter): “A force of our soldiers will be deployed in addition to police dogs in Paris. Its main goal will be to detect explosives and combat terrorism.”

Media reports say that allies, including Britain and Italy, will also participate by providing dozens of police personnel to help patrol the streets. French government sources stated that 35 countries have responded positively so far, and said that “the United States of America will also send its own security contributions to help secure the 2024 Paris Olympics.”
