Securing Online Deliveries: Protecting Your Packages from Theft

Clothes, shoes, telephones, game consoles, tools… Today, buying online is child’s play. In a few clicks, the deal is done. And although orders are made on secure sites, delivery can sometimes be laborious.

Indeed, more and more package deliverers are stealing items ordered by everyone.

Deliveries on the back of mules: Amazon’s new technique for delivering parcels

In the columns of HLN, Annelies Bulté recounted the misadventure that happened to her. She receives a message from Bpost indicating that her package has just been delivered. But at her place or at her neighbours’, there is nothing. She contacts Bpost, who contacts the postman. The latter claims to have deposited the package safely in front of the door. But Annelies was at home and was waiting for the package carefully. By then addressing her neighborhood via Facebook, she realizes that the postman was not at his first attempt. With, each time, expensive objects stolen.

Contacted by our colleagues, delivery men wishing to remain anonymous tell how to steal a package: “There are several ways to achieve this. For example, some couriers claim to have delivered a package correctly, when they only track it. They take a photo of the delivered package, sign it themselves and then simply take it with them. Then, when a complaint comes in, it’s their word once morest the customer’s.”

Other flights can also take place in the depot. “At the start of the day, we receive a list of all the packages that we have to deliver. We indicate which packages we actually take with us and which we cannot find. But there too, people lie. […] Bpost will not search your van either. In this case, the customer receives a notification indicating that his package has been ‘lost’ en route”, says another delivery person.

A problem that Bpost is trying to combat by enlisting detectives who must monitor parcel deliverers.
