“Securing Internet Communication in Remote Islands: Satellite Experiment on Matsu Island by Taiwanese Engineers”

On the 21st, an experiment was conducted to secure Internet communication using satellites on Matsu Island, a remote island in Taiwan.

The experiment was conducted by engineers of a foundation that has a cooperative relationship with Taiwan’s Digital Development Department, connecting to the Internet using a communication satellite at an altitude of 8000 km and making a video call with the main island of Taiwan. I was checking the communication status by doing things like

The location of the experiment is only 20 kilometers from Fujian province in China, but nearly 200 kilometers from the main island of Taiwan.

On Matsu Island, in February this year, two submarine cables for communication connecting with the main island of Taiwan were cut one following another within a week, and it was said that it was difficult to connect to the Internet for more than a month.

Taiwanese authorities suspect that the cable was cut when Chinese fishing and cargo ships passed through nearby waters.

Guo Zuolin, the director of the foundation who was in charge of the experiment, said, “In the future, we plan to focus on developing technology in the field of satellite communications and combine it with existing communication methods to build a more robust Internet.”

The Taiwanese authorities believe that it is important not only for citizens’ lives but also for security to secure Internet communication on remote islands in the event of a disaster or emergency. We are planning to install receiving terminals in various places.
