Arriving as every morning at the bicycle parking lot at Guillemins station, offering 270 spaces, here is the note that users of the place have been able to discover in recent days. With a clear message therefore: from now on, this indoor car park will be secure… and paid for.
This news is causing quite a stir in the Liège cycling community and in the City of Liège in particular. Contacted this Friday, the mayor’s office told us that the latter “deplores that the City has not been consulted while we are in continuous contact with the SNCB”. We understand that this “paid” novelty could indeed slow down the accessibility of the city and the policy aimed at greater intermodality. At a time when people in Liège are being pushed to abandon their cars.
Contacted this Friday as well, SNCB denies this. On the contrary, this decision would also have been taken following a request from users of the place…
Safety and comfort
”The car park we are talking about and which is currently being secured is the one located to the right of the station. It has 270 spaces and, until now, this was free. This decision to create a car park here with an access gantry aims above all to secure the place,” explains Élisa Roux, spokesperson for SNCB. “And in fact, this change was also a request from our customers because ultimately, it allows for better comfort. It is an initiative which should simply make it possible to avoid bicycle thefts”… or incursions by unwanted people and making the place insecure, we must understand.
In addition, Élisa Roux details that the supply of bicycle parking around Guillemins station remains significant, including free parking. “In addition to the parking lot currently being secured for 270 spaces, there is, in front of the station next to the taxis, free parking for 164 spaces + 64 paid spaces. It is not clearly visible at the moment because of the tram works but it is well informed with signage”. It is therefore this open but “covered” car park located at the entrance to rue Varin. “And there is also the car park located at the station, on the kiss&ride, which offers 24 free spaces”…
Please note that the price of (newly) paid parking is 7.5 euros per month, 20.9 euros for 3 months and 75 euros per year. Rates that apply to train subscribers. Without subscription, the amounts increase respectively to 12.5 euros, 35 euros and 125 euros.
