Secrets 4 will share passwords without giving up iCloud

Secrets isn’t the most well-known password manager, but it’s a great alternative if you’re looking for a simple, subscription-free app. Instead of setting up its own servers for synchronization, the developer operates those of Apple, all data passing through iCloud. The next major update will add important functionality without changing this mode of operation: Secrets 4 will make it possible to share chests and all the passwords they contain.

Thanks to this feature, Secrets will be able to compete more effectively with the heavyweights on the market, which almost all offer a solution for sharing passwords. This is especially handy within a household, where you can create a shared vault with all the common passwords. The fourth version of the app will allow you to create three different types of vaults: local (without synchronization), personal and shared. These last two are synchronized via iCloud and access will also be done through this.

To allow this novelty, the foundations of Secrets have been extensively revised with a brand new engine to manage encrypted data. The update retains the 256-bit key used for encryption in the secure enclave of Apple devices by default, and you will be able to use only Face ID or Touch ID to access data. You can also define a password, instead of or in addition to biometrics. Without a password, adding a new device must be done from a previously authorized device, a little like the iCloud keychain.

At startup, Secrets 4 will by default offer to use biometrics only, here Touch ID on an Apple Silicon Mac.

These big new features justify an update that will be paid for by all users, the first since the initial release of the app. But the good news is that Secrets is sticking to an old-school, no-subscription model by default (although a subscription will be offered for those who prefer) and current customers will get a preferential rate. The exact prices are not yet known, we can however indicate that Secrets 3 is sold for € 22.99 for the macOS version and once more the same amount for the iOS version.

Note that the current Secrets 4 beta is a universal app, compatible with iPhones and iPads as well as Macs, which perhaps gives hope for a single price. Anyway, the curious can test the beta, but the developer warns that bugs are to be expected at this stage and that it is best to back up your data well first.
