Cécile de France and Albert Dupontel in “Second Tour” by Albert Dupontel at the cinema on October 25.
CINEMA – « I knock open doors with great enthusiasm “. These words from Albert Dupontel, a few days ago on France Inter, sum up perfectly Second tourthe new film from the unclassifiable director, released this Wednesday, October 25.
Because in fact, the filmmaker pulls out all the stops to paint the political-media society in his own way, not afraid to put on clichés and to magnify in abundance the faults of a society lacking in imagination. Journalists who allow themselves in the middle of the presidential campaign not to cover it, news channel banners (barely) more exaggerated than usual, bodyguards who get excited, absent communications advisors.
It is not the realism that Albert Dupontel is looking for in this fable where politics only serves as a backdrop to do what he prefers: to take his spectator far from reality, to surprise him, to make him smile, laugh or laugh. move people, defend the weakest and reverse roles.

After the few heavy jokes regarding the Romanians “ found at red lights », the atmosphere is funny, comical, unexpected, full of suspense and above all poetic. A feature film which is in line withGoodbye idiots (2020, 7 Césars including best film) for its twists and turns bordering on trash and which might almost constitute the sequel, without necessarily achieving the feat.
Far from politics, but full of suspense
A woman – Cécile de France, like Virginie Efira before her, comes to listen and help the hero – Albert Dupontel in both cases, and takes the light. Impeccable in the role of Miss Pove (for Point of view), a sports journalist who switches to political service because of a film on the shareholders of her own channel, Cécile de France is as touching as her cameraman sidekick played by Nicolas Marié (99 francs, Goodbye idiots).
Responsible for following the candidate Pierre-Henry Mercier (Albert Dupontel), they will quickly move away from the daily life of the campaign to discover more than their colleagues and carry out the investigation. At the center of an incredible intrigue, the trio which will become a mysterious quartet takes us far from meetings and campaign trips, to fly towards a simple, but poetic morality.
We remember the masterful scene of the debate between two towers – which regularly suffers from poor production and interpretation – and the plans of the Cévennes dear to Dupontel which will delight nature lovers. The director might have set his plot in any other atmosphere – not sure that politics is the most judicious, but it allows him to address the questions of environment, identity and justice that he cherishes.
He who accuses the media of “ script everyday life with a lot of anxiety », still on France Inter, a rare interview that he gave, allows us to get away from it for an hour and a half. Better than nothing.
