Second part of free practice

Cloudy. Smog. Air +23…19С, track +39…30С

The first training session was completed ahead of schedule due to technical problems with access to CCTV cameras on the track, extending the duration of the second from an hour to an hour and a half – and it started half an hour ahead of schedule.

The FIA confirmed that the work on the cameras on the track has been completed, the problem has been temporarily solved – and they have a backup plan in case any difficulties repeat.

The condition of the asphalt on the Gilles Villeneuve track left much to be desired – the riders complained about the lack of grip, about the bumps that were felt all over on a stiff suspension – like last year, but for some reason even stronger.

Max Verstappen complained about the synchronization of the gearbox – it worked later than he pressed the paddles, together with the engineers they solved this problem for a long time.

The forecast promised rain, even a hurricane – everyone tried to fulfill the mandatory program. The clouds were thickening.

Everything was going well until the 30th minute, the training was stopped by red flags. Hulkenberg’s car froze on the track in a cloud of smoke after entering the pit lane, the marshals rushed to extinguish it, and the disappointed Niko wandered into the pits on foot – fortunately it was not far away.

Eight minutes later, the riders left again. Perez slowly returned to the pits after touching the barrier at the exit of the eighth turn, but the car was not damaged. And a couple of minutes later, red flags reappeared – at the exit of the ninth turn, Esteban Ocon, on command from the pits, stopped the car. And everyone returned to the boxes. A moment before, Tsunoda, after a braking error, flew out in the first turn, but did not interfere with this either for himself or for his rivals.

After the resumption of the session, the riders hurried to the track – it got noticeably dark because of the clouds. On the pit lane, de Vries drove under the wheels of Magnussen, who had time to slow down – there was no collision. Russell tried to sign an autograph on the “Wall of Champions”, but there was not enough status and literally a couple of centimeters. Pierre Gasly also tried to meet her, but at the last moment in a side slip he got away from the collision, and then Piastri did not leave, but without visible consequences.

In five minutes, the idyll with flying fluff from local poplars and groundhogs sitting under bridges was broken not just by rain, but by a downpour that washed away both the riders and the fans from the crowded stands already on Friday. There was simply no point in continuing the session. Everyone turned into boxes and breathed a sigh of relief. The forecast for Saturday also promises rain.

Lewis Hamilton took the lead with a lap time of 1:13.718.

First part of free practice

Sunny. Smog. Air +21…22С, track +32…37С

Smoke from forest fires inevitably affected training in Canada – the circuit was enveloped in thick smog, but Pierre Gasly’s stop in the first minutes of the first session had nothing to do with it. The French driver Alpine stopped between Turns 7 and 8 due to powertrain problems, causing first yellow and then red flags.

The engineers first asked him to restart the power plant, so the marshals withdrew, and then returned to evacuate the car.

After a very long pause, Gasly’s car was quickly removed, but due to problems with the optical communication line along the borders of the autodrome, it was not possible to establish control over the CCTV TV cameras.

The pause turned out to be extremely undesirable – the forecast promised rain, and the teams expected to work, but the cars were in the pits while the engineers dealt with the equipment. Fans in the stands “started the wave”, but they would also like to see cars, not an empty track.

Gasly’s car was taken to the pit lane, and the red flags were not removed. The stopwatch counted down the time until the end of the session, and the teams could not work – everyone was waiting for the FIA engineers to solve the problem with the cameras, so not only Gasly, but everyone, in fact, lost the first training session.

Ricciardo posed for photographs with a pleased Horner, Hamilton waved his hand to the enthusiastic cries of fans who greeted their idol. Since there are no support races under the auspices of the FIA this weekend, it was first decided to extend the first training session by half an hour due to technical problems, and then did not continue, not having confidence that the specialists would meet this time. Typical Canada.

The second training time was increased from an hour to an hour and a half.
