Second holiday start in Austria: The next traffic jam weekend is imminent

2023-07-05 09:02:00

The ÖAMTC expects waves of travel from the metropolitan areas as early as Friday followingnoon, and the main traffic routes in western and southern Austria will be overloaded from Saturday morning. “The greatest loss of time was in Slovenia last weekend – 20 kilometers of congested traffic from the border near Spielfeld (A9) to Maribor due to construction sites,” says the ÖAMTC mobility information, which once more locates a bottleneck here. Further delays are expected before the Slovenian-Croatian border crossing at Gornji Macelj.

Potential congestion points can be found on the southern autobahn (A2) in the Villach area, the eastern autobahn (A4) with the Bruck an der Leitha-Ost construction site, Bruckneudorf junction, on the Innkreis autobahn (A8) with the Suben border point, and on the Pyhrn autobahn (A9). the Bosruck and Gleinalm tunnel toll booths, the construction site areas of St. Pankraz, Windischgarsten and Inzersdorf, Klaus as well as Gratkorn Nord and Ubelbach.

The Tauernautobahn (A10) shows potential for congestion throughout its entire course, but especially in the Salzburg area and the Werfen tunnel group as well as before the St. Michael im Lungau tollbooth, on the Inntalautobahn (A12) in the oncoming traffic area of Wörgl and in the greater Innsbruck area. Traffic jams are also possible along the entire route of the Brenner motorway (A12), especially between Innsbruck and the Schönberg toll booth and at the Luegbrücke construction site.

“There will be more going on this year”

“This year will be even busier than last year. Already at the start of the holiday season last weekend, the first traffic jams in this year’s summer traffic occurred on the Tauern Autobahn (A10) in front of the Katschberg tunnel and the St. Michael toll station. The construction site at the Werfern tunnel group is “ready to travel”. You shouldn’t cause any major problems,” says ÖAMTC congestion consultant Herbert Thaler.

In Salzburg, many departure and transit blocks for transit traffic will come into effect once more on Friday, 00.00 a.m. “We will also keep an eye on whether these bans are being observed. Of course, there are always situations in traffic jams in which uninformed travelers can still be given information,” says Thaler.

During the summer holidays, he and his colleagues will work alternately on Saturdays on the Tauern Autobahn (A10) between Walserberg and St. Michael im Lungau. Even minor breakdowns can lead to traffic jams that stretch for kilometers. On their motorbikes, the traffic jam consultants have the opportunity to reach defective vehicles quickly and get them moving once more.

In Tyrol, driving bans are once more in force for vacationer transit on several state roads in the districts of Kufstein, Reutte, Innsbruck and Innsbruck Land, the ÖAMTC informs. This is intended to counteract massive alternative traffic in the event of traffic jams on the main connections.

From Thursday, July 6th to Saturday, July 8th, the Electric Love Festival will also take place at the Salzburgring. Most visitors arrive via the Westautobahn (A1), the Thalgau exit and the Enzersberg Landesstraße (L117) or via the Wolfgangsee Straße (B158). Arrivals on Wednesday and Thursday, but especially departures on Sunday, will lead to traffic jams. On Sunday there will be roadblocks on the route of the Ötztal Cycle Marathon.
