General unemployment situation

The latest report from the State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO) reveals a slight decrease in the number of unemployed in Switzerland in April 2024, with 106,957 people registered, a decrease of 1,636 compared to the previous month. The unemployment rate fell from 2.4% in March to 2.3% in April, although this figure marked an increase of 18.1% from the previous year.

Statistics by age groups

Unemployment among young people aged 15 to 24 fell by 4.4%, totaling 9,086 registered, but showed an increase of 17.6% year-on-year. For those aged 50-64, unemployment also fell by 1.1%, falling to 30,268, however, it remains up 11.9% compared to April 2023.

Job seekers and vacancies

The total number of registered job seekers reached 177,570 people, down slightly over one month but up 13.8% over one year. The number of vacancies decreased slightly to 41,531, with 19,811 positions subject to mandatory advertising due to high unemployment in some professions.

Reduction of working hours and end of rights

The reductions in working hours affected 3,286 people in February 2024, marking a sharp drop in both the number of people affected and hours lost. Furthermore, 1,951 people exhausted their rights to unemployment insurance benefits during the same month.

Implications et perspectives

The labor market situation shows signs of stabilization with a monthly drop in unemployment. Nonetheless, the year-over-year increase highlights persistent challenges, possibly exacerbated by structural adjustments and changes in labor demand.
