Sebrechts Center Transition: Asylum Seekers to Relocate by March 2024

Currently, the Sebrechts center accommodates 350 asylum seekers. It will be freed of its occupants from March 2024 to accommodate students.

Asylum seekers in Home Sebrechts will have to move by March 2024.

They will be hosted in another center in the municipality of Molenbeek-Saint-Jean, which will be “better suited” for them, says Fedasil. This place will, however, be smaller than Home. It has a capacity of 350 places, compared to 600 at Sebrechts.

Home Sebrechts had been adapted to accommodate Ukrainian refugees, then assigned to the reception of asylum seekers. This had also led to tension between Fedasil and the municipality of Molenbeek. “This new assignment exerted strong pressure on the surrounding neighborhood, among the most densely populated in the municipality which also houses a number of people in precarious situations.“, recalled Catherine Moureaux (PS), mayor of Molenbeek on Monday.

Last August, Fedasil submitted an application for planning permission to officially transform the home into an accommodation center. Like the mayor, the Secretary of State for Asylum and Migration Nicole De Moor welcomed the successful completion of the “intense and constructive discussions” with which the Brussels Region was also associated.

Concerning Fedasil, which was in battle with the municipality over this center, abandoned its permit application.
