Sébastien Buemi returns to the circuits this weekend. Two weeks following the 24 Hours of Le Mans, the 34-year-old driver from Vaud is in Portland (Oregon), to take part in the American round of the Formula E championship (race in the night from Saturday to Sunday). World champion in the electric category in 2016, Buemi will not be competing for the title this year. However, he intends to improve his current ranking.

“It’s true that it’s a little harder this season than the previous ones, admits Buemi. However, I feel that I have quite a bit of speed. But I have not yet managed to materialize in the race. Moving from the Nissan e.Dams team to Envision Racing in the off-season, Buemi has 29 career podiums (including 13 wins). But he hasn’t been on the box this season, despite two pole positions. His best results of the season are two fourth places (in Saudi Arabia and Berlin). He currently sits ninth in the world championship standings with a total of 62 points, 66 points behind fellow Australian Nick Cassidy, who is currently third.

“I will take one year following another, but as long as I feel the desire to win in me, I will do everything to achieve it.”

“I really hope to improve my position at the end of the season, insists Buemi. I have a good car, I know what I’m capable of, it’s up to me to achieve it. I have five races left this season, I hope to achieve a positive result this weekend in Portland.

One thing for sure: Buemi still has the sacred fire. “I always want to, it’s true. My goal is to win as many races as possible, although that hasn’t been the case yet this season. I will take one year following another, but as long as I feel in me the desire to win, I will do everything to achieve it.

The disappointment of Le Mans

Between the Jakarta E-Prix on June 3 and 4, and the Portland E-Prix this weekend, Sébastien Buemi took part in the 24 Hours of Le Mans on June 9 and 10. An event he has won four times (2018, 2019, 2020 and 2022). This time, his Toyota No 8 had to settle for second place.

“We are a little disappointed,” he said. We passed by for not much. One of my teammates (note: the Japanese Ryo Hirakawa) had an accident which cost us some time. Without this exit from the road, we would certainly have won, since the Ferrari which finally won lost a minute in its pits by having to perform a “Power-Cycle” reset. After dominating the start of the endurance season, we would have liked to win at Le Mans. But that’s how it is, we have to accept.”

Despite this relative disappointment, Buemi and his teammates remain at the top of the World Endurance Championship. “It’s always the same thing, specifies the driver from Vaud. When you don’t win at Le Mans, a race that counts double, you put the focus on the championship. That’s what we’re going to do. We are currently in the lead, with a 25-point lead. As there are 75 left in play (3 races), we can manage.

Will Buemi win a fourth World Endurance Championship title following those of 2014, 2019 and 2022? He seems to be off to a good start.
