The world number 12 was a size too big for Sebastian Ofner on Saturday in Shanghai. The 27-year-old Styrian had no chance in the second round of the Masters 1000 tournament in China once morest the American Tommy Paul with a score of 3:6, 0:6. The match only lasted 70 minutes.

Ofner fell behind in the opening game with a service loss and gave up serve a second time to make it 3:6. He didn’t find a single break ball in the second round either and even missed the game of honor. Paul took advantage of the second match point. The good news for Ofner is that he is currently in the top 50 in the live ranking at 46th place. However, given the way the tournament in Shanghai goes, he might also be eliminated.

“It’s of course a small milestone to be in the top 50 in the world. That’s incredible for this season, especially because I started at 193,” said Ofner. “Now I still have a few tournaments left. I can manage to consolidate it by the end of the year.” His next opportunity to do so will be in Tokyo the week following next, then he will return to Vienna for the Erste Bank Open.
