In the final of the ATP 125 Challenger tournament in Ilkley, Austrian Sebastian Ofner and Jason Kubler from Australia faced each other in an official tour match for the first time.
At the beginning both players confidently held their service games. In the seventh game, the Styrian faced two breakballs at 15:40. The Austrian No. 1 was able to fend off the first with an ace before he had to concede the loss of serve with a double fault. After a smooth service game, the 30-year-old Kubler had several set balls when Ofner served, but he mightn’t use them. After a 15:30, the number 97 in the world rankings scored three times in a row and secured round one.
In the second act, Kubler managed the early break with the only chance in the third game and was no longer naked in the further course of the match with his own service. After 80 minutes, the Australian beat the 27-year-old Ofner 6: 4, 6: 4.
Due to the defeat in the final, Sebastian Ofner currently has to qualify for the Wimbledon tournament, as the registration deadline was before his great run in Roland Garros. Nevertheless, the man from Graz has improved to position 69 in the current live ranking by making it into the final.
