Sebastián Báez, the highest-ranked Argentine in the ATP, had to withdraw due to an injury to his right foot and abandoned his US Open dream

At this time of year, fitness becomes a headache for elite athletes who continue to participate in high-level competitions. Tennis is one of the many sports that does not know of breaks and Sebastián Báez suffered it firsthand: during the duel against the Dutchman Tallon Griekspoor, who was 6-1 and 2-0 up, the 23-year-old Argentine had to withdraw from the field due to an injury to his right foot that left him on the path to the second round of the US Open.

On court seven, and after almost an hour of play, the 23-year-old from Buenos Aires could not bear his physical pain and decided to put an end to his dream of the last Grand Slam of the year. Although it is not known what type of injury the tennis player has, and in the next few hours he will undergo the corresponding studies to determine the severity of what happened, Báez explained the reasons for the drastic succession. “Today I woke up with a strong pain in my foot. It was from one day to the next. I could not continue like that because it did not let me play.” Bad luck for the man from Buenos Aires who played a match of almost four hours against Luciano Darderi and perfectly. He confessed that “I did not feel anything in the previous days, it is a shame to end like this, it was something very unexpected and inopportune,” and he will wait for the studies once he arrives in Buenos Aires.

Unfortunately, this early elimination will also have a direct impact on his ATP ranking: as he was defending the third round of last season, he will lose at least 40 points. Therefore, we will have to wait until the last day of the US Open to find out how many places he will drop in the rankings.

In his duel against Tallon Griekspoor, the Argentine had to retire from the field due to a physical ailment in the second round of the US Open

Meanwhile, Dutch tennis player Griekspoor has already confirmed his opponent for the third round: he will face Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov, who defeated Australian Rinky Hijikata in the second round.
