“Seattle Mariners’ rookie Bryce Miller shuts out Detroit Tigers for 5-0 win, lifting team above .500”

DETROIT — Seattle’s rookie right-hander Bryce Miller shut out the Detroit Tigers in seven innings in Saturday’s 5-0 victory that lifted the Mariners to above .500 for the first time since the opening day of the season.

Miller (2-0) allowed three hits, two in the first inning, striking out three without walking. In three starts, Miller has allowed just one run and seven hits, walking one and striking out 18 in 19 innings.

Miller is the second Seattle pitcher with an ERA under 1.00 (0.47) in his first three career starts. The Venezuelan Félix Hernández (0.86) in 2005, was the other.

Jarred Kelenic hit a two-run homer in the third and Teoscar Hernandez hit a solo shot in the fourth. They are tied for the team lead with eight.

Alex Faedo (0-1), making his second start of the season and first of his career once morest the Mariners, allowed three runs on four hits, striking out one and striking out seven to tie his career high.

The Mariners added two more runs in the ninth on Hernández’s RBI single and Julio Rodríguez’s score. Chasen Shreve’s wild pitch led to a score by Eugenio Suárez.

For the Mariners, the Dominicans Julio Rodríguez 3-0 with a run scored, Teoscar Hernández 4-3 with a run run and two RBIs. Venezuelan Eugenio Suárez 3-0 with a run scored.

For the Tigers, Puerto Rican Javier Báez 4-1. Cuban Andy Ibáñez 3-0.
