Seat will invest around three billion euros in its main plant in Martorell in the coming years in order to complete the transformation from combustion engines to electric cars. In 2025, the then smallest electric cars from Volkswagen will roll off the production line there for various group brands. This also includes the Cupra Urban Rebel. Seat has been given the lead in the so-called Small BEV.

Today around 12,000 people work in the factory and at the headquarters in Martorell. The location has a total area of 2.8 million square meters, which corresponds to an area of 400 soccer fields, and is currently celebrating a milestone birthday. In February 1993, Seat inaugurated the factory following 34 months of construction. The construction costs amounted to around 244.5 billion Spanish pesetas (1.47 billion euros). The company thus relocated production from the Zona Franca in Barcelona, where the brand has been building cars since 1953, to Martorell, 30 kilometers away. Since then, more than twelve million units have left the factory. There are a total of 45 models that have been and are being exported to more than 70 different countries around the world. Last year, 83 percent of the vehicles that left the production line were shipped abroad.

The first models to roll off the line at that time were the second generation of the Ibiza and the first generation of the Cordoba in Martorell. At the beginning, the plant produced around 1500 vehicles per day. In the past 30 years, 4.7 million Ibizas and 2.5 million Leons as well as over a million Cordobas have been built there. The current production bestseller is the Cupra Formentor. As part of the Volkswagen Group, the Martorell plant has also manufactured the Audi Q3 and currently manufactures the Audi A1. (awm)
