Asuncion, IP Agency.- The installation of the four animal monuments that will be part of “The Sculpture Walk” was completed, a new space located in the Mbaracayú Biological Refuge, located in the city of Saltos del Guairá (Canindeyú department).
The statues, works of artist Raúl Ortigoza, arrived from Ypacaraí (Cordillera) and were immediately installed in the enclosures specially prepared for the purpose.
These are large artistic iron structures that will represent different species of wild animals preserved in the Alto Paraná Atlantic Forest (Baapa) and that are part of the Conservation Objects (OC) established in the 2024-2028 Management Plan of the biological refuge.
These include the nine-banded armadillo (tatú hũ); the gua’a kanindé (which gives its name to the fourteenth department), 4 meters wide and 3 meters high; the marsh deer (a species found only in the Mbaracayú Refuge) 7 meters high; and the mbói jagua, 8 meters long. They will rest on concrete bases that have already been built by the Binational.
The aim is that, through the integration of art and nature, visitors can learn about and appreciate some of the conservation objects of the refuge, which are also part of the Itaipu Biosphere Reserve (RBI).
The sculptures were created with materials seized by park rangers over 15 years, within the framework of the Protection and Surveillance program. The tasks of creating the statues were closely monitored by employees of the Entity’s Protected Areas Division.
The opening date of the new walkway at the Mbaracayú Biological Refuge has not yet been confirmed. However, once all the corresponding technical reviews are approved, information will be provided so that visitors can learn about this new educational and tourist space proposed by the Binational. The site will invite visitors to learn more about the rich biodiversity of the region.
