Screenings and meetings with authors at the “Baltic Wave” film festival in Nida Culture

Already next Friday, August 23. The “Baltic Wave” film festival will start at the Nida community house, along with a series of meetings with people who make films.

On the opening night of the festival, the director Aistė Stonytė, whose debut film “Mamutu medžiklė” surprised the professionals with its maturity, aesthetic concept, open and non-simplifying view of events and the conflicts between government and artistic people.

The second film of the opening night – Marija Kavtaradze’s play “You don’t remember anything” (2023) will be presented by producer Marija Razgutė; this one of the most famous film production professionals of her generation, not only in Lithuania, but also in Europe, will share the secrets of the profession with the audience.

By the way, the audience of “Baltic Waves” will also see another film produced by her – the feature film “My Freedom” by Latvian director Ilze Kunga-Melgailes (2024, “My Freedom”)based on true events and telling the gripping life story of one of the leaders of the Latvian revival, Ita Kozakevič. The film will be presented at the festival by the laureate of this year’s “Silver Crane” – the best editing director of the year, Silvija Vilkaitė-Ramanauskė.

Director Arturas Jevdokimovs and producer Ringailė Leščinskienė will come to Nida with a new documentary film “The Life and Death of the Christmas Tree” (2023), which has not yet been shown in the cinema repertoire. stories.

The director Vytautas Dambrauskas, visiting Nida, and his documentary film “The Ticket” (2023) have become a discovery for even the most demanding film critics these days. This film is about the Žalgiris basketball team in its “golden” days in 1979-1989, but the director managed to tell about the time, people, the adventures that accompanied them, and about the change in our society in general.

The theme of the development of society is also the theme of the film “Karta. EU” (2024, dir. Eimantas Belickas) part. This is a unique project that has been in development for twenty years – since the day Lithuania became a member of the European Union. The author of the idea, director Arūnas Matelis and producer Algimantė Matelienė, will share their memories about the idea, about how they filmed the children of the new European generation from the day they were born until today.

Director Irma Pužauskaitė will present her debut feature film “Step 9” (2022) to the “Baltijos Bangos” audience, and this is a great opportunity to talk with the author about the complex themes of the film (communication between teenagers living separately and their parents, addictions) and about the challenges they face directors making their first film.

Film distributor, Giedrė Krikščiūnaitė, creator of the festival’s guest film program “Bear, Lion and Branch”, will show two important films from the Baltic Sea countries recognized as the best in many international festivals – Akio Kaurismäkio’s Fallen Leaves (2023, Kuolleet lehdet) and Christian Petzold’s Flaming Sky (2023, Roter Himmel).

In Nida’s “Vasaros knygyne”, cinematographer Viktoras Radzevičius will present the photo album “Atmintis” of portraits of cinema people, moments from filming locations, published this year, and film critic, festival program coordinator Rasa Paukštytė – the three-volume “Lithuanian cinema. Thresholds of time, signs of development”, dedicated to the development of the country’s cinema.

The 16th “Baltic Wave” will take place on August 23-27. In Nida, at the Community House, there will be 16 screenings of Baltic films, some of them free. Activities of the Animation School for families will be held. The festival is organized by the Union of Lithuanian Cinematographers and the Nida Culture and Information Center “Agila”.
