The investigation aimed at identifying the people who attacked a scout troop on the night of Friday to Saturday at a camp in Bouillon is continuing. For the record, a group of hooded individuals burst into the camp when the young people had returned to their tents. Scouts were threatened with knives and firecrackers. Arguments ensued.

Firecrackers, altercations and knife threats: Flemish scouts attacked in Bouillon by hooded individuals

“A group of young people, outside the camp, came to their camp with quarrelsome intentions”, indicated the mayor of Bouillon, Patrick Adam. investigation.”

No longer feeling safe, the young people decided to interrupt their stay. “We accompanied them by putting a vehicle and premises at their disposal. The children arrived home safely. That’s the main thing,” added Patrick Adam. “These acts of aggression, if proven by the investigation, are regrettable, lamentable and are the act of a minority”, continues Patrick Adam, who says he is “tired by this kind of act.”

This is not the first time that scouts have been victims of barbaric acts. A few years ago, a Brussels troop was the victim of scandalous cases of vandalism with severed lashings of a piling while eight scouts slept during a camp organized near Orval, in the province of Luxembourg. One of them broke his collarbone in the fall. Other incidents are to be deplored each year.

The Scout Federation records, on average, one assault on summer camps each year. “This kind of aggression is rare, fortunately. However, this still happens too often. We generally list one per summer. We do not see any particular increase and this type of aggression is often very sporadic. These are really isolated cases”, explains Gilles Beckers, spokesperson for the non-profit organization Les Scouts.

Violation of private property, intimidation, assault and battery

There are many reasons why some individuals attack scout camps. “In some places, a large number of camps can be a reason. Sometimes it will be for another reason. Whatever happens, an attack of this type is a serious matter: violation of private property, intimidation, sometimes violent aggression, blows, injuries, etc. These situations are unacceptable and we expect the authorities to treat them with the utmost seriousness”, continues Gilles Beckers.

“When a situation of this type arises in our federation, we invite you to file a complaint with the police. At the same time, we assist the camp managers for the follow-up by ensuring that everyone is comfortable”, he concludes.
