American Scottie Scheffler limited costly errors and won the Masters Tournament for a second time in three years on Sunday, while Tiger Woods had another disastrous day.

Scheffler delivered a card of 68 (-4) to win the first major tournament of the season by four strokes. The world number one also wore the green jacket in 2022.

The 27-year-old American made three consecutive birdies at the turn to put pressure on his closest pursuers, Max Homa, Ludvig Aberg and Collin Morikawa.

Scheffler made a bogey on the 11th hole, but everything came crashing down behind him at the same time. Morikawa and Aberg recorded a double bogey on the same 11th flag and Homa made a double bogey on the next hole, thus opening the door for the leader.

After making a par, Scheffler recorded three birdies in four holes to pull away. He then played cautiously but effectively to confirm his victory with a cumulative score of -11.

The Swede Aberg (69) took sole possession of the second level, at -7.

Morikawa (74) lost a few thousand dollars on the 18th hole when he bogeyed and allowed Tommy Fleetwood (69) and Homa (73) to join him in a tie for third at -4 .

Corey Conners was the highest-ranked Canadian in the tournament following posting a 73 in the final round. He shared 37th place, 18 shots behind Scheffler. His compatriot Adam Hadwin (70) tied for 53rd position, at plus -12.

It was a tough weekend for Tiger Woods at the Masters Tournament.

The American finished the Augusta classic at +16 following 72 holes, accumulating a card of 304 strokes, his worst result in his three-decade career.

This is only the second time that Woods has failed to go under the 300 mark at the Masters Tournament, the first time coming in 2022, when he finished with a card of 301 following two rounds of 78.

Woods nevertheless spoke of a good week, saying he would prepare for the other major tournaments of the season: the PGA Championship in May, the United States Open in June, and the Open British, in July.

I fought well on Thursday and Friday, he argued. It got worse later.

Woods played 40 on the first nine holes on Sunday, the day following an 82, his worst in a major tournament. At the Memorial in 2015, Woods brought home his worst PGA card in the third round, an 85.

The five-time Augusta champion, 48, is still recovering from several surgeries that limited his appearances in recent seasons on the PGA Tour.

I’m going to continue weight training and cardio, Woods said. I will keep myself active, get stronger and continue to make progress. I hope to be able to allocate more and more time to training sessions.

Woods made a triple bogey at the fifth, two holes following being bogeyed. He also lost a stroke on the sixth hole. Woods has not finished last in a competition since 2020, at the Genesis Invitational.

Sunday’s round was his 100th at Augusta National.

Woods was playing with Neal Shipley, the only amateur player remaining. Shipley concluded at 300, at +12.

Woods nevertheless continues to attract multitudes of supporters who wish to catch a glimpse of the man who has become the face of golf. They applaud all his shots, good or bad, and give him all kinds of encouragement.

He notably received a huge ovation on the 18th hole, where he made par.
