Scotland to lift all restrictions on Omicron variant

The First Minister of Scotland, Nicola Sturgeon, expressed her “rediscovered optimism” and announced the removal of arrangements made in December to curb the outbreak. In particular, she referred to data which “allow us to believe that the course of the Omicron wave has been crossed”.

Monday January 24 promises to be a day of celebration in Scottish pubs. That day, “all restrictions put in place in response to the emergence of Omicron will be removed”, trumpet The Herald, in unison with all of the national press. The announcement was made on January 18 by the Scottish Prime Minister, Nicola Sturgeon, who mentioned “rediscovered optimism” and his hope that the nation has entered into a “quieter phase” of the pandemic.

The arrangements made in December following the discovery of this highly contagious variant of Sars-CoV-2 mainly concerned “bars, restaurants and nightclubs”, recalls the Glasgow daily. Starting Monday, “table service will no longer be compulsory in pubs, and restaurants can return to full capacity, without social distancing”.

Discotheques will be able to reopen, even if their attendance will still be subject to the health pass. And no gauge will limit indoor events anymore.
