Scientists work on a blood test to detect Alzheimer’s

Very good news for the diagnosis of Alzheimer’s. Expensive brain imaging or a very painful lumbar puncture is usually needed to diagnose Alzheimer’s disease.

Fortunately, researchers from various universities around the world worked to develop a blood test that will be used to diagnose the disease.

A blood test to detect Alzheimer’s

Alzheimer’s is a progressive disease that affects memory and other important mental functions. So far there is no cure for this disease and diagnosis is still a problem.

the researchers focused their efforts to develop a blood test that detects a particular form of tau proteinspecific to Alzheimer’s disease.

This blood test was tested in at least 600 patients who were in different stages of the disease. They found that the protein levels were consistent well with the levels detected in a lumbar puncture.

That is, this test, if verified correctly, might reliably distinguish Alzheimer’s disease and other neurodegenerative diseases.

What next in this investigation? Now what is needed is to expand the tests in a larger group of patients, with different racial and ethnic origins. Likewise with those patients who have different stages of memory loss or with other potential symptoms of dementia.

Currently there is no single test that can determine that a person has Alzheimer’s. Doctors can test when a person has dementia, but it’s hard to know the exact cause.

Diagnosing the disease requires taking a look at your medical and family history, doing physical and neurological exams, as well as tests such as blood tests and brain imaging studies.
