Scientists warn about popular recreational drug among young people

Known as laughing gas or “proto”, the nitrous oxideused in anesthesia or cooking, has become a popular recreational drug, especially among young people. Her euphoric effect fast and its very cheap cost have contributed to the increase in its use.

In a new study, published in the Canadian Medical Association Journalresearchers warn regarding the health hazards chronic use of this gas (source 1). They also detail the biological signs for diagnosing excessive use of this laughing gas. They thus indicate that chronic use of nitrous oxide can lead to functional vitamin B12 deficiencywhich can lead to long-term health effects, including neurological consequences. The three most common forms of toxicity are spinal cord damage (myelopathy), nerve damage affecting strength and sensation (neuropathy), and behavioral abnormalities (encephalopathy), they detail.

Thus, a B12 deficiency in a patient, without any other possible cause identified, should suggest the possibility of excessive consumption of nitrous oxide. “Health professionals should ask regarding regarding the use of nitrous oxide in patients with unexplained findings suggestive of vitamin B12 deficiency or other compatible neurological symptoms”, conclude the scientists. They add that if stopping the use of nitrous oxide is the mainstay of treatment, a vitamin B12 and methionine supplementation is also recommended.

Measures adopted in France to protect minors

In France, a law aimed at protecting minors from this laughing gas was enacted on June 1, 2021. The sale of nitrous oxide, even in the form of a carboy for culinary use, is thus Prohibited to minors, whatever the packaging and the place of purchase (shops, supermarkets, internet).

In Paris, an order regulating the possession and consumption of nitrous oxide on public roads, initially in force until July 31, was extended until October 31, 2023. The capital’s police headquarters indicated that it had observed a net reduction in the consumption of this gas following the implementation of this order.
