Studies show that you should exercise for about 30-40 minutes a day, writes sciencealert.com.
The study suggests that up to 40 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity each day is a good amount to offset 10 hours of sitting. True, any physical activity or even just standing up helps to some extent.
This is based on the 2020 in a published study that analyzed nine previous studies. They included data from a total of 44,370 people in four different countries who wore fitness trackers.
During the analysis, it was found that the risk of death among individuals who chose a sedentary lifestyle increased as the time spent in moderate and vigorous physical activity decreased.
“The association between high sitting time and risk of death was not significantly different among active individuals who engaged in approximately 30-40 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity compared to those who spent little time sitting,” the researchers explained in their article.
In other words, engaging in relatively vigorous activity — cycling, brisk walking, gardening — can reduce your risk of early death to the level you would have if you didn’t sit all day, according to sciencealert.com.
Researchers say people can be more active by choosing to take the stairs instead of the elevator, playing with children and pets, doing yoga or dancing, doing housework, walking and cycling.
