Scientists are finding ways to slow down the biological clock of yeast cells. In this way, this prevents them from aging faster and achieving greater longevity. The authors of this study are from the University of California, who did the experiment with yeast.

The yeast chosen in this case was Saccharomyces cerevisiae, which even though it is very distant from humans, has some similarity with our biology. According to the researchers, the life expectancy of the microorganism was extended by average of 82%, in addition to providing potential to treat age conditions.

To achieve this result, the scientists manipulated genetic circuits behind the regulatory mechanisms that ease the strain on more specific cellular processes. With this, the calculations of the cellular degradation circuit were made through computational modeling.

The aging delay effect occurred when they understood how processes work and modified them. In this way, they were able to manipulate the circuit so that it oscillated more between aging states instead of preferring only one of them. So, while they didn’t stop aging, they were successful in slowing it down.
