Archaeologists at the University of Zadar have discovered the submerged ruins of a stone road made some 7,000 years ago. Part of the Soline Neolithic site in Croatia, the building was found under a thick layer of marine mud at the bottom of the Mediterranean Sea on present-day Korčula Island and could be related to the prehistoric Hvar culture.
Discovered in 2021, the site caught the attention of the scientific community after archaeologist Mate Parica identified objects at the bottom of the ocean that could have been made thousands of years ago by humans. The expert decided to dive to investigate the evidence at a depth of about 5 meters in the Mediterranean Adriatic Sea.
On that occasion, during the dive, Parica and a colleague found stone walls that may have been part of a settlement dating back thousands of years.
With further investigations, archaeologists made the new discovery of a road about four meters wide. built from stacked stones around 4900 BCaccording to estimates made through radiocarbon analysis of preserved wood.
“People walked this [estrada] almost 7,000 years ago,” the University of Zadar said in a Facebook post. According to experts, the artificial islands in the region helped to protect the archaeological site from strong waves and other disturbances that could degrade its artifacts more quickly over time.
According to scientists, there are a variety of interesting artifacts hidden in archaeological sites around the island of Korčula. Igor Borzić, an archaeologist at the University of Zadar, recently noticed curious underwater structures, and upon investigating, was surprised to discover a settlement almost identical to the structures at the Soline site.
Discoveries from the Neolithic era — also known as the “Polished Stone Age” — are rare, so the archeology community is celebrating the results of the new study, which could shed light on how technology developed in the period.

The research that led to the discovery of the 7,000-year-old road is the result of a collaboration between experts from the Dubrovnik Museums, Kaštela City Museum, Korčula City Museum and the University of Zadar.
