Scientists create an artificial intelligence capable of cracking passwords using keyboard noises

On Thursday August 3, 2023, British scientists shared an article in which they explained how they managed to create an artificial intelligence capable of deciphering passwords thanks to the noises emitted by the keyboard of a computer.

Has a new security barrier just fallen? Last Thursday, researchers from the University of Durham, Surrey and London published the fruit of their research: they created an artificial intelligence which, from computer keyboard sounds, is able to crack passwords.

Experiment conducted via telephone

With an accuracy of 95% and thanks to the sound of the keyboard alone, this artificial intelligence can find what the person is typing on their computer.

During the experiment, the researchers worked with a Macbook as a noise emitter, and a simple telephone, a IPhone in this case, placed 17 centimeters from the device on a microfiber cloth to avoid unwanted noise.

Without using high-performance specialized microphones, the scientists managed to have their AI analyze the recording, which deciphered the characters typed on the keyboard. From a recording on Zoomthe success rate was 93%.

Data issue

Like most Artificial Intelligences, this robot needed data to be able to identify the next ones it will face. The researchers had the AI ”listen” to numerous key sounds, across the entire keyboard, so that it got used to the subtle sonic differences between them.

The same kind of feat might be possible by using, not the rather noisy computer keyboard, but touch screens.
