Scientists: Blue light emitted from screens causes early puberty in children

However, a new study conducted by the Ankara City Hospital team of scientists Found that it may also speed up puberty and bone growth in children.

The study, presented at the European Society of Pediatric Endocrinology conference, revealed that blue light emitted from smartphone and tablet screens may accelerate bone growth and cause early puberty in children.

The scientists studied 36 mice, including 18 males and 18 females, and divided them into three groups. The first group lived in normal light conditions, and the second and third groups were exposed to blue light for 6 or 12 hours a day. Mice exposed to blue light experienced faster bone growth and an earlier onset of puberty compared to mice in the first group.

The research team found that blue light increases the levels of reproductive hormones in mice that are exposed to it regularly, causing them to suffer from early puberty and changes in the ovaries that could harm fertility in the future, knowing that the pattern of puberty in mice is similar to the pattern of puberty in humans.

It is noteworthy that girls usually reach their maximum height between the ages of 14 and 16, and boys between approximately 16 and 18 years of age. With precocious puberty, a sharp growth spurt occurs earlier than expected, which leads to subsequent cessation of growth and osteoporosis in old age.

This could also explain the sharp rise in cases of early puberty during the Covid-19 pandemic, when millions of children were spending a lot of time daily in front of screens. Early puberty is linked to higher rates of depression and anxiety throughout life, and even breast and uterine cancer.

Dr. and lead researcher on the project, Aileen Kilinc Ugurlu, said: “This is the first study of its kind to show how blue light can affect physical growth and development, which prompts us to conduct further research on the impact of exposure to the screens of modern computers and smartphones on growth.” children”.

The study was published in the journal Medical Daily
