Scientists from the University of New South Wales, following a study, concluded that Europe is threatened by a cooling of the climate due to global warming.
At the moment, the warm climate in Europe is due to the influence of the warm Gulf Stream in the Atlantic Ocean. However, this course can be disrupted due to global climate changes that periodically make themselves known.
As scientists explain, sea currents exist due to the “pressure” of cold and dense masses of salt water near Antarctica. However, the melting of glaciers and, as a consequence, the desalination of sea water, leads to a decrease in its salinity and density. This, in turn, leads to a weakening of ocean currents, cooling them.
“If global carbon emissions continue, ocean currents will slow down by more than 40% over the next 30 years, which might lead to collapse,” said Matthew England, one of the authors of the study.
