Uterine tumors (fibroids) are one of the most common problems for women. Although they are unlikely to turn into cancer-like conditions, fibroids can lead to many other physical problems as they delay treatment. However, fibroids can be cured with medications, surgery, and non-surgical treatments such as uterine artery embolization (UAE). Among these, UAE is the most scientific and innovative treatment method. PK Muhammad Rafique writes. * What are fibroids? Fibroids are non-cancerous growths in the uterus. Fibroids can range from the size of a pea to the size of a large lemon. It is not clear why they occur, but it has been shown to be related to the production of the female hormone estrogen. Fibroids are most common in people between the ages of 16 and 50, when estrogen production is at its peak. Fibroids are more likely to develop in overweight women. After menopause, the risk of uterine tumors decreases. Different types of fibroids grow. These can be classified as intramural, subserosal, submucosal and cervical fibroids. * Symptoms? Anemia, irregular periods, heavy bleeding, increased waist weight, menstrual blood clots, cramps, leg pain, abdominal pain, back pain, and so on are common symptoms that can be seen in normal women. If fibroids grow into the uterus, pregnancy can be prevented, some may have premature births, miscarriages, and birth complications during pregnancy. * Treatments Small fibroids that do not cause physical problems and do not show symptoms do not require treatment. However, minor symptoms can be treated with medication to some extent. Hormonal medications are also available for treating fibroids. Such treatments should be resorted to only following seeking expert medical advice and not self-medication. Other methods are surgical and non-surgical advanced treatments such as hysteroscopic resection, myomectomy (key hole, laparotomy) and hysterectomy which removes the uterus itself. But with the advent of simple and scientific modern treatments, the number of people who depend on surgeries has decreased. * Uterine Artery Embolization Uterine artery embolization (UAE) is the most advanced technique used today to reduce the size of the uterine tumor without surgery. Treatment is by pinhole intervention in an angiogram model. It is done in a state-of-the-art cath lab with the help of 3D live navigation and perfusion mapping, so there are no side effects. UAE is performed with the patient awake without anesthesia. Treatment is by using a thin tube (catheter). Imaging technology uses a catheter passed through the radial artery in the arm to block blood flow to the blood vessels and their branches leading to the tumor. With this, the tumor shrinks and heals completely. With such treatments, the chances of fibroids coming back are low. Being able to treat any number of tumors simultaneously is a major advantage over surgery. There is no risk of infection as there are no cuts or stitches of any kind. This can also protect the uterus and ovaries. There will be no blood loss and there will be no scars are also the characteristics of UAE. The patient can walk within an hour and return to normal life within three days. A maximum of one day rest is required. This revolutionary method of treatment is the most scientific and relatively inexpensive. It was widely discussed and spread rapidly when the original study was published in the New England Journal.
