Science Secretary Discontinues Use of X After Elon Musk’s Takeover

The Science Secretary recently expressed his disillusionment with X, stating he is considering leaving the platform due to a lack of enjoyment following its acquisition by Elon Musk, which has dramatically changed the site’s atmosphere.

Peter Kyle refrained from categorizing Musk as either a friend or adversary but candidly disclosed that he has stopped actively engaging with content on the app, indicating a significant shift in his online presence.

Elon Musk, who is set to take on a prominent role in the administration of president-elect Donald Trump, identifies himself as a “free speech absolutist” and has reinstated thousands of previously banned accounts, fostering a controversial environment on the platform.

In response to increasing concerns over the proliferation of “far-Right conspiracy theories and racism,” The Guardian decided to sever ties with X, previously known as Twitter, following Trump’s election victory earlier this month, characterizing the site as “ever more toxic.”

‘I strive to communicate’

When asked if his experience on X had improved under Musk’s leadership, Kyle was direct: “No, it hasn’t. In fact, I don’t scroll through it.”

“While I still utilize the platform because it provides an audience crucial for my communication efforts, both my team and I manage my account, posting necessary updates. However, the genuine enjoyment I once found in interacting on X has diminished significantly,” he admitted.

“I recognize there are individuals on that platform eager to connect and share insights that stem from my role as Secretary of State.”

When pressed about the possibility of following The Guardian’s lead and leaving the platform, Mr. Kyle reflected, “I can see the circumstances where I would. But again, Nick, I’m open-minded about this kind of stuff going forward.”

“For now, my focus remains on striving to communicate effectively with individuals from a diverse range of backgrounds and perspectives,” he concluded.

**Editor**: Thank you for joining us⁣ today, Peter. You recently expressed some disillusionment⁤ with the social media platform X, particularly since its acquisition by Elon Musk. Can you share what specifically has led to your current feelings about the⁤ platform?

**Peter Kyle**: Thank you for having me. The atmosphere⁢ on ⁣X has changed significantly since Musk took over. Initially, I found it to be a vibrant place for dialog and‍ sharing ideas. However, I’ve noticed an increase in hostility and misinformation, which ⁣detracts from the enjoyment I once derived from engaging with others on the platform.

**Editor**: You mentioned⁤ a ⁤sense of ‘lack of enjoyment’—can you elaborate on what that⁢ means in a practical⁤ sense? ‍How has this manifested in your experience?

**Peter Kyle**: Sure. The tone of conversations has ⁢shifted. There seems to be a greater focus on sensationalism, and constructive debates have been overshadowed by negativity. I’ve also observed a rise in trolling and aggressive commentary that makes it less appealing to participate. It feels less like a community and more like a battleground.

**Editor**: You’ve indicated that you’re considering leaving X altogether. What factors would influence your final decision?

**Peter ‌Kyle**: I’m‌ weighing a few things. If the ⁤platform continues to prioritize controversy over meaningful ‌discourse, I might step back.
