[Science-friction] Satellite constellations endanger the ozone layer

Protected from chlorofluorocarbons since 1987 and the Montreal Protocol, the ozone layer is gradually repairing itself. A report by the Government Accountability Office (GAO), a US organization equivalent to the French Court of Auditors, sounds the alarm regarding this little-known environmental danger that is the launch and end of life of satellite constellations.

Prized by companies like OneWeb or Starlink, low Earth orbit attracts many nano-satellites. Nearly 5,500 devices would make revolutions around the globe currently, estimates the American organization. Elon Musk’s company already has 2,000 units… and has a regulatory green light to send 12,000 more. A dense activity which is not without consequences for the climate.
