Association of Austrian Newspapers awards prizes for practice-oriented media research and scientific journalism contributions in three categories
Vienna (OTS) – The Association of Austrian Newspapers (VÖZ) has been honoring outstanding academic theses on current and relevant issues for media companies with a publishing background for 14 years now. The aim is to promote practice-oriented training and research at local technical colleges and universities as well as a closer network between science and practice.
Media Research Promotion Prize and Hannes Haas Young Talent Prize honor scientific work on practice-relevant topics
This year, the VÖZ Science and Media Promotion Prize will once more be offered in three categories, each worth EUR 2,000: The Media Research Promotion Prize is awarded for excellent master’s theses or dissertations that address practice-relevant questions in the media industry and provide important impulses for media companies .
The Hannes Haas Young Talent Prize is awarded jointly with the Quality in Journalism Initiative (IQ) with the support of the Austria Press Agency (APA) and is aimed at authors of works that deal with the social significance and responsibility of journalism.
Science Journalism Prize: Making the complexity of science tangible
The prize for science journalism will also be awarded once more. This category honors a journalistic text, video or podcast contribution that was published in an Austrian medium (print or digital) in 2023 and presented a current scientific topic in a way that is understandable and easy to grasp for a broad audience.
With this award, the VÖZ is responding to the worrying skepticism regarding science in some areas of society. “If scientific findings are denied, well-founded and scientifically open media reporting must counteract this,” emphasizes the chairman of the jury for the VÖZ Science and Media Sponsorship Prize, Univ.-Prof. Matthias Karmasin. “Providing serious information regarding complex issues and classifying them is an essential task of high-quality media. Responsible science journalism, which we honor in this category, can make an important contribution to our commitment to greater understanding and recognition of science.”
