Schwarzenegger meets arch enemy: The 7 funniest and most emotional Oscar moments

1. Schwarzenegger and DeVito reunited

More than 35 years following their appearance in the cult comedy film “Twins,” Arnold Schwarzenegger (76) and Danny DeVito (79) teamed up at the Oscars. The two actors presented the award for best visual effects and received a standing ovation right from the start. They were on stage together “for obvious reasons,” DeVito said. “We both tried to kill Batman,” Schwarzenegger added. The Austrian portrayed the villain “Mister Freeze” in “Batman & Robin” in 1997, and Danny DeVito was the “Penguin” in “Batman Returns” (1992). However, both villains lost out to the Bat-Man in the film adaptations. When the camera finally caught actor Michael Keaton, who played Batman twice, Arnie and DeVito had the laughs on their side. “You really have nerve to show yourself here,” said Schwarzenegger.

2. Ken sang my Slash

Hollywood star Ryan Gosling was among the musicians who sang on stage at the Oscar gala. The 43-year-old, who was nominated for an Oscar as Best Supporting Actor for his role as Ken in “Barbie,” performed the song “I’m Just Ken.” Wearing a pink glittery suit, the actor stepped from the audience onto the stage and got the whole room singing and dancing along. When cult guitarist Slash joined in the anthem, the mood was completely exuberant.

3. Naked facts

It’s been 50 years since a speedster became a topic of conversation at the Oscars: In 1974, during actor David Niven’s acceptance speech, a man in an Adam’s costume ran across the stage. For the anniversary, presenter Jimmy Kimmel wanted to re-enact the scene, but the wrestler and actor John Cena, who was hired for the role, was reluctant. Ultimately, the 46-year-old appeared naked in front of the audience, wearing Birkenstock sandals and an envelope that covered the essentials.

4. The most embarrassing moment of the evening

Actor Al Pacino caused confusion at what was probably the most important announcement at the end of the gala. The 83-year-old was supposed to name the winner in the “Best Film of the Year” category, but never thought for a moment regarding making it even a little exciting. Instead, he quickly pulled the card out of the envelope and mumbled “Oppenheimer” almost incomprehensibly. At first it wasn’t clear to everyone that the winner had already been announced, but cautious clapping eventually turned into loud applause.

5. Oscar goes to Ukraine

More serious minutes came with the awarding of the Oscar for best documentary to the Ukrainian filmmaker and journalist Mstyslav Chernov (“20 Days in Mariupol”). In his moving acceptance speech, the 39-year-old said that he wished he had never had to make this film. “I wish I might exchange this Oscar for the fact that Russia never attacked Ukraine, never occupied our cities.” He cannot change the past. “But we can all together make sure that the history books are written correctly, that the truth victorious and that those who gave their lives will never be forgotten.”

6. The most beautiful acceptance speech

Robert Downey Jr. was delighted to receive the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for his role in “Oppenheimer”. His words of thanks were humorous and touching at the same time: “I would like to thank my terrible childhood and the Academy – in that order. And of course my vet, I mean: my wife Susan. She found me and saved me.” The 58-year-old plays the main character J. Robert Oppenheimer’s opponent, the politician and entrepreneur Lewis Strauss, in the drama. It is his first Oscar; the American has already been nominated twice before.

7. Jimmy Kimmel jokes regarding Germany

In his opening speech, moderator Jimmy Kimmel was encouraged to make a little joke regarding the Germans: “For the first time ever, three foreign language films have been nominated for the best film, two of them with Sandra Hülser in the lead role. Sandra plays one in “Anatomy of a Case”. Woman on trial for murdering her husband and, in “The Zone of Interest,” a Nazi housewife living near Auschwitz,” Kimmel said: “While these are very heavy topics for American moviegoers, one calls “They make romantic comedies in Sandra’s home country of Germany.”
