Schumer meets in Beijing, Wang Yi expresses “disappointment” with China’s statement on Israeli-Palestinian conflict

(AFP, Beijing, 9th) U.S. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and his delegation visited Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi today and expressed “disappointment” with China’s statement on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Wang Yi welcomed Schumer and his party at the Diaoyutai State Guesthouse in Beijing.

In his speech, Wang Yi expressed the hope that this visit “will help the United States understand China more accurately.” He also expressed the hope that this trip would help both sides “handle existing differences more rationally and help bilateral relations return to the track of healthy development.”

Schumer thanked Wang Yi for “welcoming us.” “To demonstrate our willingness to engage in candid and constructive communication, I am leading this bipartisan delegation,” he said.

“We really appreciate you taking the time to meet with us.”

But he also told Wang Yi that he was “very disappointed” by the statement issued yesterday by Beijing’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs on the continued escalation of violence between Israel and Palestine.

“The Department of Foreign Affairs’ statement … does not demonstrate sympathy or support for Israel during these difficult, tumultuous times,” Schumer said.

Beijing yesterday called for “calm” and an “immediate ceasefire” but stopped short of explicitly condemning Palestinian attacks that have killed hundreds of people in Israel, instead urging a two-state solution to end the violence. (Translator: Zheng Shiyun/Verification: Chen Zhengyi)
