Jakob Schubert is climbing world champion for the fifth time. The 32-year-old Tyrolean won the lead gold at the World Championships in Bern on Sunday, just ahead of the 16-year-old Japanese Sorato Anraku. The German Alexander Megos secured bronze. Schubert is the first climber to be a four-time world champion in lead climbing (2012, 2018, 2021, 2023).
The defending champion hit 48+, a mere shave ahead of Japanese super talent Anraku, who had 48. Immediately following Schubert, the Czech Adam Ondra failed just as early as the Briton Toby Roberts, the best in the semifinals. Only places eight and ninth remained for them.
Schubert, one of the most successful sport climbers in history, won his fifth World Cup gold, in addition to the four in the lead also in 2018 in the combination. There are four silvers and one bronze. The collection is completed with Olympic bronze in 2021 in Tokyo and European Championship gold in the combination in 2022. Schubert now has ten World Cup medals and a total of 16 podium finishes at major events.
Jessica Pilz missed her fourth medal at the women’s World Championships. The 2018 lead world champion in Innsbruck had to settle for sixth place. Ai Mori won gold ahead of Janja Garnbret, who had won bouldering. The 19-year-old Japanese and the Slovenian star each made it to the top, but Mori with the clearly faster time.
