Schönbrunn Zoo’s New Approach: Animals Named for Their Well-being, Not Marketing

2023-07-13 11:37:16

The animals in Schönbrunn Zoo will continue to be given names – the zoo underlined this in a broadcast on Thursday. However, the naming should no longer be placed in the foreground as a marketing tool and actively communicated to the outside world. On request, the names will continue to be announced, as a spokeswoman for the APA said.

This change happened a few months ago and was therefore also discussed on the zoo’s social media pages. However, this only became known to the general public through a report in the “Tiroler Tageszeitung”, which also explained the zoo’s motivation for taking this step. However, in the heated media discussion that immediately followed, the zoo’s point of view fell by the wayside.

The zoo emphasized that the focus was primarily on the well-being of the animals. “Our protégés are the be-all and end-all for us and of course each animal has its own individual name. In the future we just don’t want to put the naming of the animal in the foreground as a marketing tool,” emphasized zoo director Stephan Hering-Hagenbeck.

The naming is the responsibility of the animal keepers, who look after the welfare of the animals every day. “Through the lively discussion, Schönbrunn Zoo would like to focus in particular on the increasing extinction of species and the loss of habitats and the increasingly important task of zoological gardens in species protection and in the development of reserve populations,” it said.
