Scholz’s measures – The Time

The German government has tightened its grip after the attack in Solingen a week ago: Berlin has announced a tightening of the laws on carrying knives and has decided to introduce restrictions on benefits for some asylum seekers. The ban on carrying knives applies especially at festivals and fairs as well as on long-distance transport, German Interior Minister Nancy Faeser told the press. The German minister also announced the abolition of aid for asylum seekers who entered another EU country before arriving in Germany.

The suspect in Friday night’s attack, which killed three people and injured eight others at a concert in the market square of the town east of Dusseldorf, is a 26-year-old Syrian, identified as Issa H, who had been issued a deportation order in Bulgaria, where he had first entered the EU last year, but continued to remain in Germany.

The crackdown was announced Monday by Chancellor Olaf Scholz, who promised “to do everything” to speed up the expulsion of illegal refugees after the attack in Solingem claimed by the Islamic State. A connection still being examined by German investigators.
