Serbia will not be able to join the European Union if it does not recognize the self-proclaimed republic of Kosovo. This statement was made during a visit to the Balkans by German Chancellor Olaf Scholz.

“Kosovo and Serbia must reach a comprehensive agreement. It is clear that the agreement should resolve the issue of recognition [самопровозглашенного] Kosovo and Serbia, because two countries cannot become part of the EU without recognizing one another, ”RIA Novosti quotes him as saying.

The Republic of Kosovo is a partially recognized state in the Balkans, the capital is Pristina. It is not controlled by Serbia and the states are in conflict. In addition, Serbia does not recognize this theory as independent and sovereign. Sweden, the Netherlands and Somalia recognized the independence of Kosovo.

In September last year, Pristina began to interfere with traffic between the Serbian regions and the central part of Serbia. According to Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova, Serbs are being squeezed out. At the beginning of March of this year, Kosovo asked to join NATO.
