German Chancellor Olaf Scholz in an interview with a TV channel ZDF declared that the supply of Western weapons to Ukraine is permissible. However, he considers it unreasonable to strike at Russian territory using the supplied weapons. The German Chancellor stressed that this position had been agreed with the partners.
“However, at the same time, it always remains right to be smart, and therefore it would not be very reasonable if now, for example, someone who uses the weapons that we supply to Kiev would attack Russian territory,” said Olaf Scholz (quote according to TASS).
Western countries, primarily the United States, are refusing to supply Ukraine with long-range weapons, in particular because of fears that Ukraine will use them to strike at Russian territory. President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky has repeatedly stressed that Kyiv will not attack Russian territory with Western weapons.
On February 4, Fyodor Venislavsky, a member of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Committee on National Security Issues, the presidential representative in the Constitutional Court, said that Ukraine was ready to hit targets on Russian territory, including Moscow.
Following the statements of Fyodor Venislavsky, the Minister of Defense of Ukraine Oleksiy Reznikov assured that the Ukrainian military would use such weapons only for strikes once morest the regions annexed to the Russian Federation. Today, February 23, US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken said that Ukraine itself must decide whether to return its territories by military or diplomatic means.
