Schneider Electric launches studies that reveal a gap in sustainable actions

Schneider Electric commissioned three reports from independent companies that focused on the sustainability of IT and data center operations. The results reveal a disconnect between intention and action, indicating that most of the industry is still in the early stages of its sustainability journey.

The three studies were conducted separately by leading industry analysts at 451 Research, a part of S&P Market Intelligence, Forrester Consulting and Canalys. The companies collected data from nearly 3,000 global participants, including the largest colocation and cloud providers, other IT solutions, and professionals from many industries and different sizes of organizations.

The 451 Research report reveals a dilemma between the perception and reality of business organizations, which believe that their sustainability programs are more advanced than they are, as “the maturity level assessments of nearly half (48%) of respondents did not correspond to the previous answer”. The Forrester Consulting paper focused on colocation and found that 73% stated sustainability as a business priority for their organization, being their #2 priority overall, yet only 33% say their organizations have created a strategic sustainability plan. sustainability.

Canalys research shows that IT Channel partners are investing in more sustainable strategies, but are still struggling to translate investment into action, and lack a clear answer on how to achieve this goal. Another point revealed is that, of the partners, 61% have a team dedicated to sustainability and only a third have established ESG objectives.

“The study clearly demonstrates that across data centers and across the IT industry, there is a gap in sustainability actions — the intent seems to be there, but the initiative is lacking,” said Pankaj Sharma, EVP of Secure Power Divisions at Schneider Electric. “It’s clear that IT professionals understand and take steps to address sustainability. But what we lack are more comprehensive plans backed by measurable targets to create the necessary change and address the climate crisis. These three studies found an action gap on sustainability and that is the collective challenge we need to address.”

– 451 Research Special Report: Sustainability at the Edge – The Gap Between Business Plans and Sustainability Programs for IT. The document surveyed more than 1,150 medium and large companies worldwide, representing more than 20 verticals and their sustainability efforts with distributed IT resources.

Analysts have determined that many companies believe they are further along their sustainability journey than they really are. The biggest challenges on the journey include optimizing energy usage, followed by obtaining consistent data and metrics (for leading/advanced companies) and the lack of a qualified team (for start-up organizations).

Forrester Consulting: Reimagine Colocation Strategy With Sustainability Front of Mind. The researchers surveyed 1,033 global decision makers on sustainability at colocation providers around the world to explore sustainability factors in the colocation provider industry.

The paper concluded that organizations lack a strong overarching strategy for sustainability programs, with only 33% saying their organization has created a strategic sustainability plan. This indicates that the industry is still at the beginning of a sustainability journey. The survey determined that moving forward is a key to sustainability success and finding the right partner to help organizations. It also found that companies that engaged an outside consulting firm as part of their sustainability initiatives are 33% more likely to see an improvement.

– Canalys: How can partners develop sustainability strategies? The study sought to understand the readiness of the global ecosystem of IT channels on the sustainability journey by surveying 500 IT solution providers. The survey defines the readiness of IT channels and their role in the wider ecosystem.

Canalys found that 60% dedicate ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance) resources and 40% expect revenue from sustainability solutions. While IT channel partners are investing in sustainability strategies, they struggle to translate this into action. The market study validates the need for end-to-end sustainable practices and solutions provided by IT and technology vendors.
