Schiphol is purchasing thirty new lifting aids to relieve baggage handlers. Previously, nineteen robots were also deployed following sharp criticism from the Labor Inspectorate.
The airport mainly wants to use the lifting aids to quickly unload the luggage of transferring passengers. In July, Schiphol already announced that it had purchased nineteen baggage robots. They can lift 80 to 90 percent of the suitcases.
In March, the Labor Inspectorate pointed out to Schiphol that the working conditions for baggage handlers at Schiphol really needed to improve. The airport had to automate the lifting work within two years, the inspectorate ruled.
Schiphol CEO Ruud Sondag says that employees in the baggage hall were positive regarding the use of the tip aids. Together with the manufacturer, Schiphol is looking into whether more lifting aids can be used.
Schiphol wants to have a lifting aid available at every workplace before April 2024. “We are working hard to improve the working conditions of baggage handlers. That is one of our top priorities,” says Sondag.
