Schengen Visa Expenditure in African Countries: Analysis and Rankings

A recent analysis of visa expenditure by SchengenVisaInfo revealed the substantial financial burden African countries face in obtaining Schengen visas. According to the results published by the platform, Algeria, Morocco and Tunisia, which occupy the top of the ranking, spent the most on Schengen visas in 2022 on the African continent. Algeria comes first with an expenditure of 15,787,992 dollars or more than 9 billion FCFA and a rejection of 45.76% out of 392,053 candidates. It is closely followed by Morocco with 10,502,448 dollars or 6.3 billion FCFA with a rejection of 28.20% out of 423,201 candidates. Tunisia recorded a total of 48,909 rejected candidates or 29.05% and $430,399.2 spent worth 259,100,198 FCFA.

Senegal, which comes in 6th position in this SchengenVisaInfo ranking, dominates West Africa. It accumulates a total of 56,866 candidates of which 41.65% obtained a refusal bringing the number of refusals to 23,683 candidates. 30,256 requests were granted for a total of 208,410.4 dollars of expenditure or 125, 463 million FCFA. The study also demonstrates that many African travelers face complex procedures, long waiting times and high visa rejection rates.
