The multi-award-winning actor Lukas Miko received the prestigious Diagonale Acting Award 2024 this year. He loves Graz with its young people and their art, the hills of Southern Styria, and the good wine.
The Diagonale Acting Award 2024 means a lot to the versatile artist Lukas Miko, who also works as a director and screenwriter, stating, “because you don’t receive this for a single role, but for a long journey that has lasted more than 30 years for me. And on such a path, there are also dry spells and periods of unemployment, times when you think you will be forgotten and can’t find new work. So when you suddenly receive an award that tells you, ‘We have indeed noticed your journey and appreciate what you do,’ that really touched me.” This was evident during the presentation. “Yes, I allow emotions,” smiled the Vienna-born actor.

But it’s not just this award that brings him to Styria. “I love Graz with its southern flair and the beautiful encounters, especially during the Diagonale. I shot my first film in Southern Styria more than 30 years ago. Plus, my aunt and godmother lives here.”
Myth, Opinion, MeToo
For him, stepping out of deeply emotional roles is not a problem. “I consider it somewhat of a myth that one becomes a different person and has difficulty returning. You remain the person you are, but you are certainly very exhausted. In November, I had a shoot where I had to portray a breakdown, a sobbing fit. We had to repeat it so many times that by the end, I felt completely drained. When I got home, I sat on the sofa with my winter coat on for half an hour because I had no strength left. That’s the normal exhaustion that probably every hard-working person experiences at the end of the day. And I have two small children, aged 8 and 13, who quickly bring me back to reality. The transition can be tough,” he laughs heartily, “but not in an exhausting sense, rather in an immediate way.”

After a moment of reflection, he adds, “In English, the term ‘Part’ is used instead of ‘Role.’ That’s very clever because as an actor, I need to look for that part within myself. The aspect of not knowing initially is also important to me. First, I say that I don’t know this person, and I will now do everything to get to know them. I find that to be a wonderful attitude towards other individuals,” explains the 53-year-old, who is not afraid to express his opinions. “In the past, I would have voiced them more quickly; fortunately, I’ve now understood that one must develop these opinions first. But I see it as a privilege when one is heard through their work and must utilize that for something relevant, giving a voice to those who are not heard.”
When asked about MeToo, Lukas states: “I want to clearly emphasize that women have had fewer rights for centuries, and a distorted image of women has a fatal effect that continues to this day. That’s why it is important to strongly oppose it and to institutionalize protections, assistance, and compliance offices where victims of abuse can turn. And yes, there are also men who are affected by abuse. However, men probably find it even harder to speak about it, possibly out of greater shame because they believe they must maintain a certain image of toughness and strength. However, it’s essential to highlight that this does exist.”
Family Provides Strength
Lukas draws strength and energy from his family. “My wife and children are my emotional home, providing me with the strength to go out into the world and expose myself to certain things. And I don’t mean the role of a woman as merely supportive; my wife is a highly reflective performance artist who politically and socially inspires me. My children are lovingly critical of me, and I learn a lot from them.” He keeps them away from the media and social media. “I love my children dearly, and sometimes I’d like to shout my happiness about their existence through pictures,” he smiles, “but I always hold back because I think children can’t yet comprehend what can happen with that.”
This summer, he is shooting two new feature films: the children’s film “The Prank” and “Dracula Park.” “In the first, I play a villain. I’m looking forward to it because it’s finally a film that my children can watch. The second is a clever, humorous deconstruction of Dracula by Radu Jude, who recently won the Golden Bear at the Berlinale.” Furthermore, Miko is working on his own screenplay about the doctor Dr. Ignaz Semmelweis. “He discovered the cause of puerperal fever in the mid-19th century and the importance of handwashing as a prophylaxis. But the obstetric elite fought against him, leading to unnecessary deaths of women and children for decades more. This is a story that is very dear to my heart. My great cinema dream.”

Der vielfach ausgezeichnete Schauspieler Lukas Miko erhielt heuer den großen Diagonale-Schauspielpreis 2024. Er liebt Graz mit seinen jungen Menschen und ihrer Kunst, das Hügelland der Südsteiermark und den guten Wein.

Der Diagonale-Schauspielpreis 2024 bedeutet dem vielseitigen Künstler Lukas Miko, der auch als Regisseur und Drehbuchautor arbeitet, sehr viel. Er betont: „Denn diesen bekommt man ja nicht für eine Rolle, sondern für einen langen Weg, der bei mir schon über 30 Jahre andauert. Und auf so einem Weg gibt es auch Durststrecken und Arbeitslosigkeit, Zeiten, wo man denkt, man wird vergessen und man findet keine neue Arbeit mehr. Und wenn man dann plötzlich so einen Preis bekommt, der einem sagt: ‚Wir haben deinen Weg sehr wohl wahrgenommen und schätzen, was du machst‘, das hat mich sehr berührt.”
Ich glaube nicht an ein Leben nach dem Tod, aber ich glaube an ein Leben vor dem Tod.
Die Verbindung zur Steiermark
Lukas Miko liebt Graz mit seinem südlichen Flair und den schönen Begegnungen, insbesondere während der Diagonale. „In der Südsteiermark habe ich vor mehr als 30 Jahren meinen ersten Film gedreht. Und dann lebt auch noch meine Tante und Taufpatin hier.“
Mythos, Meinung, MeToo
Aus sehr tiefgehenden Rollen herauszukommen, stellt für Miko kein Problem dar. Er erklärt: “Ich halte das ein wenig für einen Mythos, dass man da ein anderer Mensch wäre und Schwierigkeiten habe, zurückzukehren. Man bleibt der Mensch, der man ist, aber man ist sicherlich sehr erschöpft.”
Er fährt fort: “Im November hatte ich einen Dreh, in dem ich einen Zusammenbruch, einen Heulkrampf spielen musste. Den mussten wir so oft wiederholen, dass ich am Ende einfach total leer war. Und als ich zu Hause war, bin ich erst mal eine halbe Stunde mit meiner Winterjacke auf dem Sofa gesessen, weil ich keine Kraft mehr hatte.”
Haltung zu sozialen Themen
Auf die MeToo-Bewegung angesprochen, äußert Lukas Miko: „Frauen hatten über Jahrhunderte weniger Rechte, und ein verzerrtes Frauenbild wirkt fatal bis ins Heute hinein. Deshalb ist es so wichtig, ganz scharf dagegenzuhalten.”
Familie als Kraftquelle
Kraft und Energie schöpft Lukas aus seiner Familie. „Meine Frau und meine Kinder sind mein emotionales Zuhause, das mir die Kraft schenkt, in die Welt zu gehen und mich gewissen Dingen auszusetzen. Und damit meine ich nicht die Rolle der Frau als bloße Unterstützerin; meine Frau ist eine hochreflektierte Performancekünstlerin, die mich politisch und sozialdenkender inspiriert.”
In diesem Sommer dreht er zwei neue Kinofilme: den Kinderfilm „Der Prank“ und „Dracula Park“. “In Ersterem spiele ich einen Bösewicht. Darauf freu ich mich, weil das endlich ein Film ist, den meine Kinder sehen können.”
Ein weiteres Projekt von Miko ist ein Drehbuch über den Arzt Dr. Ignaz Semmelweis, der die Ursache des Kindbettfiebers entdeckte. „Das ist eine Geschichte, die mir sehr am Herzen liegt. Mein großer Kinotraum.”
