  • RO*, the owner of the abused sheep from Schattdorf, was deeply shocked following the crime.

  • As she says to 20 minutes, she assumes that the alleged perpetrator intentionally assaulted the youngest sheep – because they are less resistant.

  • Now the sheep are doing better. However, RO still feels uncomfortable, also because the man is free once more.

In the middle of the night, a camera in the barn of RO* from Schattdorf registered a movement. She herself was asleep at this point. At 5:15 a.m., she received a call from Kantonspolizei Uri. “They told me they caught him,” says RO to 20 minutes. She went to her stable; the alleged perpetrator was no longer on site at that time. The police arrested him and took him away.

Fallen into the trap on the first night

Things started in a mysterious way for RO. As she tells 20 Minuten, she was taken aback when she found a mobile phone in the stable a week ago that someone had lost or left behind. An accidental find – the phone was covered in dung. “A week later, when I came into the barn, I noticed that my sheep were nervous and agitated,” RO continues. Inexplicably, she found a second cell phone on the floor.

In the evening she went to the police with her mobile phone. They reacted immediately and installed a surveillance camera on Friday. “He fell into the trap the very first night,” says RO

A few days later, the canton police informed regarding the case. On Thursday, she said a man had been caught red-handed attacking a sheep. Since April 2022 the Kapo several sexual assaults on goats known. It is the same man, now 40 years old – a repeat offender.

“It’s a shock for me”

According to the police, the veterinarian found injuries in two sheep. According to RO, these are the two youngest. One lamb was born in October 2022, the other in December. So it’s barely four months old. “You can’t understand it,” she says. In the 30 years she has been a sheep owner, she has never experienced anything like this. “It’s a shock for me,” she says.

She owns a total of six sheep – as a hobby, as she says. The four older ones are between two and six years old. “I think that he has passed on the little ones because they are less resistant. The big ones would defend themselves, and they are quite bulky and heavy,” says RO. In general, however, their animals are very tame.

“I hope he goes behind bars”

Almost a week later the sheep are doing better. The two lambs who were sexually abused were not seriously injured, RO says. She herself has recovered from the shock. “But you don’t know if something like this can’t happen once more,” she says.

Also with regard to the fact that the alleged perpetrator is currently at large: the compulsory measures court has the Prosecutor’s application for pre-trial detention rejected on Tuesday. “I really hope he gets behind bars,” said RO. “I’m insecure, I feel like I’m on needles. Every morning when I go to the barn, I check if everything is ok.”

Meanwhile, the prosecutor’s case continues. “In the foreground are the facts of animal cruelty, trespassing and property damage. The penalty for all three offenses is a fine or imprisonment of up to three years,” says the responsible public prosecutor.
