The squat located at 48 rue des Palais in Schaerbeek must be evacuated on Tuesday and Wednesday. The agency for the reception of asylum seekers (Fedasil) supports registered applicants and the Brussels Region undertakes to offer a new place of reception to the last occupants.
These last weeks, Fedasil has already transferred hundreds of asylum seekers present there. Until Monday, more than 700 people, which corresponds to the majority of the public, have been relocated. On Tuesday, all the people still present in the building and volunteers to be relocated will be taken care of via a medical support system coordinated by the SCR (Services du Collège Réuni) of COCOM.
“We are going to transfer these people to three other places of reception. We want to evacuate the place because it is becoming dangerous and unsanitary. The Region will support these people“, explained a spokeswoman for the cabinet of the Brussels Minister-President Rudi Vervoort (PS).
They will be registered in a neutral place, will be fed and cared for and given new clothes. They can then go to a reception center provided by the Brussels Region, pending a possible file with Fedasil. On Wednesday, the building will be completely emptied with the support of the police and closed. The building located at 48 rue des Palais has been occupied for three months by an ever-increasing number of people, mostly asylum seekers. The particularly precarious conditions of occupation have created an extremely difficult situation.
