scenting your room at night would boost it

Sleeping well restores many parameters in our body and helps consolidate memory.

In order to boost the benefits of sleep and memory, especially in the elderly, it would be beneficial to enrich your room with perfume before sleeping. This is demonstrated by a team of Californian researchers.

Memory: the perfume stimulates it at night

To carry out their study published in Frontiers in Neuroscience, the team formed a cohort of men and women (43) aged 60 to 85, without memory disorders. They were then divided into two groups in order to be able to compare the results.

People belonging to the so-called “enriches” group were exposed to 7 different odorants per week, one per night, for 2 hours, using an odorant diffuser.

The individuals in the so-called “control” group had the same experience with minimal amounts of odorant.

A 226% improvement in cognitive abilities

Neuropsychological assessments of both groups were performed at the start of the study and following 6 months.

The results that have been obtained are eloquent. A 226% improvement was observed in the so-called “enriched” group compared to the control groupwith respect to the cognitive abilities of individuals.

“Minimal olfactory enrichment administered at night produces improvements in both cognitive and neural functioning. Thus, olfactory enrichment may provide an effective, low-effort route to improving brain health,” the experts said.

An encouraging discovery for the future of medicine

Cognitive loss in the elderly is a growing problem in society, researchers say. In their view, it is necessary to develop inexpensive, simple and effective home treatments.

“We have shown that even minimal olfactory enrichment, delivered at night, is sufficient to induce improved cognition and neural function. This type of sensory enrichment can be particularly helpful because it is inexpensive and requires little effort. This type of enrichment also appears to be able to successfully improve the cognitive ability of people with dementia,” they concluded in their study.
