First presented in 2013. At the Kontraste Festival in Krems, Vertical Cinema is a project initiated by the Dutch curatorial collective Sonic Acts.
Well-known experimental filmmakers and representatives of the visual arts were invited to create ten audiovisual works for a specially designed 90-degree rotated 35mm film projector, exhibited on a 10 m high monolithic screen.
Thus was born an impressive collection of abstract films, formal experiments, found footage, chemically processed tapes and live laser shows.
After its world premiere, the project was presented at prestigious festivals, museums and other cultural spaces around the world, becoming one of the most famous experimental cinema events of the last decade. This year, supplemented by four more works, it is also presented in Vilnius.
Challenge the visual format
Recently, the influence of technology and media on cinema is increasingly discussed. Its traditional forms move to television, avant-garde and experimental works go to art galleries, the history and present of cinema can be followed on home cinema platforms.
Not only consumption habits are changing, but also the usual screen format – vertical images captured by mobile devices are increasingly endangering the horizontal format. In response to these processes and moods, Scanorama’s pre-festival visitors are invited to reflect on the ordinary experience of a cinema screening and the evolution of cinema.
The project sessions will take place in the culture and art space “Kablys”, opening new contexts of cinema and space. in 1957 according to the standard project, the then Railway Culture Palace was built with 1994. With the assembled work of sculptor, National Culture and Art Prize laureate Mindaugas Navaks, “Kablys” vividly and ironically reflects on the relationship with historical and cultural heritage – the facade of the building collides with the pompous architecture of Soviet social realism and the free thought of the 20th century. end sculpture language.
The sculpture “Kablys” also opened up the space for intensive searches for new artistic and cultural forms at the turn of the century – in commemoration of its thirtieth birthday, “Vertical Cinema” will consistently continue these processes.
This year, the European film festival “Scanorama” will take place from November 7 to 21 in Vilnius, Kaunas, Klaipėda, Šiauliai, Panevėžys, Marijampole and Visaginas. More information – on the festival’s website scanorama.lt. The project is partially financed by the Lithuanian Film Center.
